Design For Manufacture (DFM)

At HBH Project Management, we believe that a great design is only valuable if it can be manufactured efficiently, cost-effectively and speedily. That’s where Design for Manufacture (DFM) comes in. By optimising designs early in the development process, we help eliminate unnecessary production challenges, reduce costs and decrease the time taken to transition.

Why DFM is Critical

A well-thought-out design isn’t just about aesthetics—it must also be practical for production. Without DFM projects can run into costly delays, material waste and tooling inefficiencies. Our approach ensures that every design is ready for manufacturing without compromising on quality or functionality.

Key Factors in DFM

To ensure your design is optimised for production, we evaluate:
Production Process & Material Selection – Choosing the most appropriate manufacturing method and materials based on environmental conditions, durability, appearance and cost requirements.

Part Geometry Optimisation – Simplifying complex shapes, reducing undercuts and designing components to minimise unnecessary production difficulties.

Tooling & Moulding Considerations – Incorporating essential features like draft angles and appropriate parting lines to improve moldability, reduce tooling costs and ensure smooth production.

✅ Mould Flow Analysis – with respect to injection moulding one useful DFM tool is Mould Flow Analysis (MFA) which takes the proposed injection mould tool design and computer simulates the flow of the molten plastic through the tool. This helps predict how the plastic will behave under various conditions such as flow pattern, pressure and the temperature and potentially identify defects such as sink marks and warpage in parts before starting to cut metal for the tool. MFA will help optimize both part and tool design, cutting down on potential errors that, if missed, could need expensive rectification later in the development process.
